Peer review is an essential part of the academic publishing landscape. Journal editors rely on peer reviewers to provide feedback on submitted papers in order to assess whether or not the work is publishable. Peer review therefore has an invaluable role in shaping research, as well as providing an insight into the world of academic publishing.
This certified programme is for postgraduate geography students (with priority given to second and third-year PhD students) and early-career researchers who want to gain peer-review experience in a supportive environment. Participants will be required to attend three online workshops and complete one supported review which they will receive feedback on. The workshops will provide mentorship opportunities with journal editors to provide a grounding in the practice of peer-reviewing for academic journals.
The programme is run by the RGS-IBG Managing Editor, Dr Anna Lawrence, who oversees the running of four of the Society’s journals: Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, The Geographical Journal, Area, and Geo: Geography and Environment. As the material for the programme will primarily be drawn from these journals, the programme is best suited to human geographers. However, physical geographers are very welcome to apply and we will facilitate appropriate mentoring.
This is a valuable programme for anyone considering participating in peer review or publishing their own work in peer-reviewed journals, or considering taking on an editorial position in future. It will also provide networking opportunities within each cohort of the Peer Review Academy, and an opportunity to work with journal editors. You will receive a certificate to confirm your participation in the programme, which you can add to your CV.
