Kirsten Carlson draws her inspiration from diving in the world’s oceans to sketch sea life underwater. Visit her most recent project online, Fathom Antarctica: Undersea Illuminations.

Kirsten shifted from a career in marine ecology in favor of visual science communication after spending two months in Antarctica diving on icebergs. She founded Fathom It Studios, so she can illuminate the undersea world’s unique sea creatures for everything from children’s literature to scientific journals.

She's been an artist in residence with four scientific expeditions, participated in over 20 art exhibitions, illustrated six children's books, and invented Artscipedia, an interactive coloring book, with a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) inspired approach to understanding nature.

Kirsten developed her love of the ocean while landlocked in Kansas City, United States at the neighborhood swimming pool and now lives at the entrance to the Black Forest just outside Stuttgart, Germany with her husband, rescue cats and two cattle dogs.
