Supporting geography candidates with university applications

About the session

As Year 12 students start to explore their options, many teachers will want to provide expert support and guidance in helping them to consider how and where to study Geography at university, and how to make great decisions and applications. But it’s confusing and complex – especially if you’re new to teaching.

In this session, we’ll explore some of the timelines and approaches you can take to help your A Level Geographers make great choices, become great candidates and prepare them really well for top quality university applications to read Geography and similar disciplines at university. We’ll look at the key components to think about, some top tips for supporting reading and personal statements, and the coaching approaches that you might want to take if it’s your first time through.

We’ll also look at how applications to read Geography at Oxford and Cambridge can be supported – and some of the top tips to help candidates navigate some of the specific requirements of interviews, pre-admissions tests and College choices. We’ll run this as the final half hour of the session, so it’ll be optional for people to stay on if they want to hear more.

About the speaker

Dr David Preece worked as a Geography teacher in South East London for over a decade, before joining Teach First. As well as being a former Head of Geography, he’s also been Head of UCAS & Oxbridge admissions, and supported numerous candidates through decision-making, applications and their Geographical journeys.
