This talk explores the hidden past of the Falkland Islands, spanning millions of years to the present, from fossilized rainforests to today’s unique climate and ecology.
In an expedition to the South Atlantic to answer questions about the climate changes of the recent past, they unexpectantly uncovered an ancient rainforest bed near Stanley, providing a remarkable window into the Falklands’ hidden environmental history.
The Falkland Islands’ remote location and well-preserved geological deposits make them an unparalleled site for studying past climates, biodiversity, and environmental change. Thick peat deposits in the region serve as natural archives, recording environmental shifts that offer vital insights into the potential impacts of future climate changes.
The islands’ location has particular significance for understanding the evolution of the southern westerly wind belt, and their influence on ocean carbon flux, Antarctic sea ice, and regional temperature and precipitation patterns.

About the speaker
The talk will be presented by Dr Zoë Thomas, who is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on past climate and environmental change, with a particular interest in tipping points in the Earth System.
She investigates the feedbacks, timing, teleconnections, and impacts of abrupt climate changes to better understand their role in shaping global environmental systems.
