About

I am Pakistani born and raised in Dubai. I have always had a strong passion for cartography, photography and the outdoors. These interests led me towards geography where I began my academic introduction into GIS and remote sensing. I have a deep interest in critical geography and aim to apply these technical geospatial skills more specifically to the built environment. This inspired me to do a masters in sustainable urban development at the University of Oxford.

Current or most recent role

I have a background in BA Geography and an MSc in Sustainable Urban Development from the University of Oxford. I am currently at the Satellite Applications Catapult working as a geospatial consultant. The majority of my experience lies in working with governmental and non-governmental organisations in conflict and post-conflict zones utilising geospatial data to enhance research for policy formation and data-informed development strategies.

Previous experience

I have been a STEM ambassador on behalf of the Catapult and UK space agency for the past 3 years. I have presented at universities, schools and conferences across the country and have also run workshops to give students an insight on what a life in geospatial looks like. I try and help as many students that get in touch with me and connect them with more experienced and colleagues in a range of industries where geospatial technology is being applied.

Why I want to become a professional ambassador

Geography, particularly critical geography, has given me the greatest gift I’ve ever received. The systems thinking inherent to the field has shaped a uniquely interconnected way of understanding the world, its challenges and the solutions they demand. I’m sure many geographers share this perspective, yet our skill set remains underappreciated in both academia and industry, risking the loss of potential talent. I’m passionate about showcasing the value of geography, both personally and professionally, to the next generation. I feel strongly about encouraging individuals from BAME backgrounds as there is gap in addressing this issue in geography.
