New support for student fieldwork through the Philby Award
The Society is delighted to have reached an agreement with the UAE National Library and Archives for the Library to host a range of the Society’s Collections materials in digital form. These materials all relate to the history and geography of the UAE and wider gulf region, and include imagery taken by Harry St John Philby in the early 20th century. The digitised archives and photographic materials will be made available from the UAE Library’s website for use by the region’s academic and research community.
Thanks to the generous support of Philby’s descendants, a proportion of the funds received by the Society from this arrangement will support student fieldwork projects in the UAE and wider gulf region through the Philby Award.
The Philby Award, which is part of the Geographical Fieldwork Grants scheme, is open now for applications from groups of students or others undertaking projects in UAE and wider gulf region on topics across the breadth of geography. The next deadline is 15 February 2025.
